Corey Mace has turned down an inquiry to from the Toronto Argonauts to interview for the team’s vacant head coaching position as well as a additional football operations duties, 3DownNation has confirmed with sources.
The 39-year-old is only one week removed from leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 25-17 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup, the franchise’s fifth CFL championship. It was his second season as the team’s head coach as he’s gone 21-14-1 lesading the Green and White, reaching the playoffs both years.
The Port Moody, B.C. native has ties to the Argos from when he was Toronto’s defensive coordinator prior to being hired by Saskatchewan, winning one Grey Cup in 2022. He would have needed an additional title in order to be hired as the Argonauts head coach, as was the case when the Ottawa Redblacks brought aboard Ryan Dinwiddie as the team’s head coach and general manager from Toronto.
Mace signed a two-year contract extension with the Roughriders earlier this year, tying him to the team through 2028. Based on this latest development, it doesn’t appear he plans to leave Riderville anytime soon.
At this year’s Grey Cup in Winnipeg, Mace was asked if he had any desire to become a general manager at some point in his career and he indicated he’s never given it any thought given that he remains relatively new to his current role.
Among those who have reportedly interviewed for Toronto’s vacant head coaching position are special teams coordinator Mickey Donovan, quarterbacks coach Mike Miller, co-defensive coordinator Kevin Eiben, receivers coach Pete Costanza, and Ottawa special teams coordinator Rick Campbell.
The Toronto Argonauts finished third in the East Division standings in 2025 with a 5-13 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Franchise quarterback Chad Kelly was unable to play all season due to a fractured leg he suffered in the East Final the previous year, giving way to Nick Arbuckle, who threw for 4,370 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions to be named the team’s candidate for Most Outstanding Player.
The Argonauts ranked seventh in net offence, sixth in net defence, and seventh with a turnover differential of minus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was Spencer Brown with 314 yards, leading receiver was Dejon Brissett with 907 yards, and leading tackler was Cameron Judge with 79 tackles. Toronto ranked ninth in attendance with average crowds of 15,109, which was a 0.1 percent decrease from the previous year.
