"This is so disgusting and shameful."
This past week, an Instagram account that sells consigned luxury goods shared a video of Kim with the gray bag. One image showed her wearing a gray top, a satin skirt, and a matching draped cowl hood while posing inside an establishment. Another showed her sitting on a sofa with the bag placed beside her. The images appear to be taken from an interview tied to Kim's new Hulu series All's Fair.
According to PETA, the bags date back to the '80s and were allegedly made from the skin of an elephant that had been fatally shot on a safari. They were never officially sold by Hermés, and they're so rare that online estimates place the price of an elephant-leather Birkin as high as $125,000.
Ireland appeared to be in disbelief over the image, commenting, "This is.... Beyond."
She also reposted the clip on her Instagram story, calling the display "disgusting and shameful."
"This is so disgusting and shameful," she wrote. "I don't understand how these people are supported the way they are."
Kim didn't publicly respond to her post, and her representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. But plenty of people made their feelings known in the comments of the original video.
One person wrote, "This is deeply disgusting and disturbing," Another added, "Elephants are magical, majestic, and special beings & they are to be respected!"
Someone else said, "This is not okay. It's not 'cool,' and calling it fashion is a stretch. It's disturbing and honestly embarrassing."
"I hate this," another person commented. "Have you no shame????" one more added.
