Going back to basics, the Met Gala is a fundraising event for the museum's Costume Institute that also celebrates its spring exhibition. It has been chaired or co-chaired by Anna, Vogue's Global Editorial Director, for the past 30 years.

Typically, major fashion houses sponsor the event. Last year's sponsor was Louis Vuitton, and the gala raised $26 million for the museum. That isn't to say that fashion houses are always the sponsor — Amazon sponsored the gala in 2012, with Bezos acting as an honorary chair that year.

Earlier this month, the 2026 Costume Institute exhibition was revealed to be Costume Art. And, at the end of the announcement video, there was a quick shoutout to the newlywed Bezoses:

Many of the comments were...not thrilled:

Well, Anna was asked about the backlash at the inaugural Franca Fund Gala in Qatar. Speaking to CNN, she said, “I think Lauren is going to be a wonderful asset to the museum and the event."

“We’re very grateful for her incredible generosity. She's a great lover of costume and, obviously, of fashion,” Anna continued. “So we’re thrilled she’s part of the night.”

Last year, Lauren made her Met Gala debut in Oscar de la Renta.
